Our diverse product range caters to every season and occasion. In the spring and summer, we offer freshly made sandwiches, wraps, baguettes, and salads—perfect for retail or catering to your next function. When autumn and winter arrive, our menu shifts to hearty comfort foods, including vegetarian pastries, quiches, cakes (with no added sugar options), and a variety of wet dishes like lasagnas, curries, and frittatas, all made using traditional family recipes.
Operating from our purpose-built, food-compliant facility at 30 Phillips Street, Thebarton, we’ve created a modern, welcoming environment for our team of 20 dedicated employees. Our bakery is fully compliant with HACCP regulations, ensuring the highest standards of food safety and quality.
Today, we serve a wide range of customers, from schools, hospitals, and aged care facilities to supermarkets, cafes, and health shops. Whether you’re stopping by our on-site café, hosting a function in our event space, or simply picking up a treat, we invite you to experience the warmth, quality, and tradition that have made The Grainhouse Bakery a beloved name for over four decades.
Our History
The story of The Grainhouse Bakery is one of passion, tradition, and perseverance—a journey that began over 70 years ago.
In the early 1950s, Erminio Rinna, from Castro dei Volsci (Lazio), and Luisa Rinna, from San Giorgio La Molara (Naples), migrated to Adelaide, bringing with them a deep love for cooking and baking. Their shared passion for creating traditional Italian dishes and sweets inspired them to pour their hearts into a business. In time, they founded Rinna Cakes and Gelati, a beloved bakery and gelateria located on Stephens Terrace in Stepney (now the site of St. Peter’s Bakehouse). Specialising in wedding cakes and authentic Italian desserts, they were among the first to introduce gelato to the Adelaide community, quickly becoming a local favourite.
In November 1982, Erminio and Luisa took their vision to the next level, establishing The Grainhouse Bakery in Norwood. What began as a small family venture grew into a thriving business, built on decades of hard work, determination, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
In December 2000, the bakery moved to its current location at 30 Phillips Street, Thebarton, where a purpose-built, food-compliant facility was constructed. This modern space allowed the business to expand its operations while maintaining the traditional methods and recipes that had made it so special.
Today, The Grainhouse Bakery remains a family-owned business, now managed by two of Erminio and Luisa’s children. While much has changed over the years—a few name changes, a couple of relocations, and decades of growth—the heart of the bakery remains the same.
We still use many of the original recipes and techniques passed down from our founders, ensuring that every bite carries the warmth and authenticity of our Italian heritage.
